With film coming back fast and furious particularly in wedding photography, I thought it might be interesting to dig out my old Nikon N80 film camera, a 50mm Nikon lens, load some Fuji 400H film and take the camera with me on a few weddings and photo shoots. The result? Well, the grain is absolutely obvious in these, which is one of the best characteristics of film, but I feel like it really is the editing that makes an image – film or digital – trend in color tones like it does today. My editing style tends towards warm, or in truth, true to what I shoot (warm tones, sunset light), but with a bit of experimentation I was able to get variation in color tones that are much cooler green, whiter whites and more on-trend.
After this, I am not sure I am sold on the extra work involved in shooting film mixed with digital – it’s a difficult task to balance as a solo shooter, switching cameras and thinking quick. I feel like, with my experience, I can get very similar looks shooting digital and using just editing to emulate film, but I think I’ll keep carrying the film camera, just for kicks.
