I absolutely love when my client’s homes are featured in their lifestyle newborn sessions. This is what makes a lifestyle newborn session a little different than a studio session. Lifestyle Newborn Sessions incorporate the natural environment, natural light, and location into the photos and can include mom and dad doing everyday things (like feeding the baby, interacting with the baby) or can blend the natural environment with some more orchestrated photos. My style and preference lend itself more to the latter. I carefully blend traditional and lifestyle newborn sessions. I take a look around at the family home and choose things I want to incorporate into the photos, but then I also artfully set the baby, or mom and dad, up in those environments for the best newborn photos. I sometimes take candid, unposed images as well, if the family is looking for that. For lifestyle newborn photos, I do not bring a lot of props or rely on a lot of props (but I do have a back up with me and bring a variety of baskets, boxes and blankets (and fluff!) just in case!). But for lifestyle newborn sessions I’d much rather use special blankets, furniture and rooms in the house that really tell the story of the baby and the family.
L’s mom and dad had a fantastic house with lots of bold colors – orange and blue predominantly – and it really incorporated well into his session! This first image above was taken in L’s nursery, and I love that he’s smiling just a little and I love the photos they hung above his changing table! The rest were taken in the living room with those great orange and blue chairs. I had a snuggly blue wrap with me and also a cream one, and used both for this lifestyle newborn session. I also had some fun blue fluff and a cool wooden bowl and a basket. But the chairs, the really fun orange and blue blanket, the orange chair and that reallllly blue couch were all theirs!
