It is simply amazing to me that the beautiful and historical places of the country open wide for exploration when I travel for portraits. I am so lucky to be able to work with families who have connections to locations that are unknown to me and turn out to be beautiful, or perhaps known but never thought of. The first session on my whirlwind Northeast portrait photography trip was with the Moorer Family and took place in Arlington National Cemetery in Washington DC. I had been to the cemetery before, of course, as a tourist, but never as a professional photographer. And while we didn’t do any family shots near the gravestones, you can be sure that I took some for myself later : ) And while it may seem like a strange place for photos, in truth, I love cemeteries – they are so filled with stories, histories, and rather than sadness, a sense of remembering and moving on. And because of this family’s connection to the Cemetery, not only did I get some great shots on the grounds (starring them) but I also got the behind the scenes tour of the Lee Mansion, currently closed for renovation.
I really enjoyed this family, this location, and this session. I hope you do as well!
