I love photographing children all over the country. Every time I travel I turn into a destination portrait photographer. I get to explore new and exciting locations. I get to be challenged by the changing light and weather and still find ways to make a session work. As a Tucson Children Photographer and an Orange County Children photographer, I am used to having beautiful light and predictable weather. But when traveling, and when in a place for a short period of time, neither rain, snow, sleet or hail can keep me from doing a session.
Weather Doesn’t Matter
On the day of Avery’s session I awoke to pouring rain, but it was my last weekend day in Pennsylvania and so we decided to press on, choosing Monocacy Park https://www.bethlehem-pa.gov/parks/, a location with a dense, green tree cover that would protect us from the rain, and choosing a slightly later start time since the sun wasn’t likely to emerge from the summer clouds. I brought my Profoto light with me to help get those really well-lit shots. In the end the rain disappeared before we started and the sun peeked out towards the end, but thanks to the light I always travel with, it was allll good.
The Challenges of Photographing Toddlers
Every time I have the chance to photography Avery, the daughter of my best friend Lisa, I’m charmed. However, part of being a photographer who works with children means P-A-T-I-E-N-C-E. And even though this absolutely precious, adorable kiddo pictured below is smiling in most of these, let me tell you, there are about 200 where she isn’t. There were breakdowns. And tantrums. And refusals to cooperate. And tears. And that was just the first 20 minutes. But it’s totally OK because that’s called being a toddler. Truthfully, the challenge keeps me on my toes, and makes me even more excited when I see her grin peeking out and I am fast enough (and the light is pointed in the right direction, because, um they never stand still!) to catch it!
