Sophie+Roelof {happily ever after}

Every now and again a photographer has the chance to fulfill a dream. In this case, photographing Sophie and Roelof’s weddings (on two continents) did just that, for me. Though this was my first international wedding, I have to say that I am not sure I can top it. Though I’m willing to try. Anyone? Anyone?

After spending several days photographing the couple, from the killer e-session in Utrecht, to the fantasy castle wedding , to the country chic Connecticut wedding, I feel like I’ve known them forever. Look for two more posts soon  – one etntitled “Fairytales” with some of the most creative images from inside and outside the castle, and one documenting the Connecticut ceremony and reception.

What a fabulous opportunity. What an amazing couple. What a journey. This is the story. This is the beginning.

Cultural notes: in the Netherlands (and perhaps other countries as well) it’s traditional for the groom to see the bride before hand, arriving to “pick her up” at a set location, carrying her bouquet and offering it to her. Usually the family and close friends are present for this event. Roelof arrived in a swanky car, chauffeured by one of his friends, and met Sophie at her sister’s house. After that we took a bit of a walk around the neighborhood, using local canals and other areas for some photos. Some of the interesting points of the ceremony – the presentation of the pen used to sign the document that makes this union valid in the eyes of the state is a big deal. You’ll see a photo of the pen, as well as photos of several people signing the document – these are the witnesses (two each for the bride and groom). After the castle ceremony, the couple shared champagne and cupcakes on the terrace with their guests and then proceeded to a separate location for dinner and speeches and dancing. Of course, before that, we spent more time photographing in and around the grounds. More to come on that later!
